Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Cornell Tips One In Late as Clarkson Falls 2-1 in Double Overtime of ECAC Quarterfinals Game 2

Potsdam, NY – Both teams goaltenders played impressively all afternoon, but a goal from Georgia Schiff off a rebound at the 4:59 mark of the second overtime lifted the 13th-ranked Cornell Big Red to a 2-1 victory over the 9th-ranked Clarkson University Women's Hockey team in Game Two of the ECAC Quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights saw their record fall to 27-9-2 overall while Cornell edged up to 16-13-2. The two teams will play deciding third game in the ECAC Quarterfinals to see which team advances to the conference semifinals next weekend.

Each team had a power play chance in the first 12 minutes of the game, but both opportunities came up empty. Clarkson was able to get eight shots off during its chance, keeping the puck in the zone for all but the final few seconds while up a skater, and Cornell attempted four shots but just one was on the Knights' goal.

After its power play chance, Cornell stayed on the attack, taking shots from outside and hoping to tip the puck past Clarkson goaltender Michelle Pasiechnyk. The junior was up to the task, however, knocking shots aside and covering up a handful of attempts. Clarkson would get another power play opportunity late in the period after a Cornell cross-check, only to see Deanna Fraser stand equally tall in the crease. The Big Red's defense blocked all of the Knights' scoring chances, including a last-second attempt just as the horn blew for the period's end.

The power play continued into the start of the second period, and it didn't take long for the Knights to take advantage. After winning the faceoff and sending the puck into the Cornell defensive zone, the Green and Gold cycled around with Stephanie Markowski taking possession at the top of the slot. Markowski saw just enough daylight to wrist a shot through traffic and put the Knights up 1-0, with assists going to Nicole Gosling and Anne Cherkowski.

Cornell came back with a score of its own five minutes later. Clarkson had a shot at the other end, but the Big Red broke out the other way with Paige Kenyon taking an initial shot that was denied by Pasiechnyk. However, the rebound bounced out in front of the net where Kaitlin Jockims was able to flip the puck over Pasiechnyk's shoulder at 5:42 in the second.

At the start of the third period, Clarkson placed plenty of pressure on the Big Red. It started with a power play opportunity where Haley Winn rattled a shot from the slot off the post, but even with the chance extinguished, Clarkson continued to put together odd-player rushes that couldn't quite find the mark. After holding a 7-1 lead in total shot attempts in the first six minutes of the period, the Knights found themselves on the defensive side as the Big Red had several chances in under a minute, including two on goal and another that was blocked.

In the final 10 minutes of the third period, Cornell had two excellent scoring chances. Jockims received a pass from behind the net at the bottom of the left circle and wristed a quick shot, but Pasiechnyk split her pads to stay low and snagged the puck with her glove to end the threat with a little over eight minutes remaining. Six minutes later, Grace Dwyer snuck around the Clarkson defense and received a pass through the slot for a one-on-one with the Clarkson goaltender, but Pasiechnyk wore Dwyer's shot off the mask to keep the game tied 1-1.

Each team had an early opportunity about five minutes into the first extra session, but the true chances came in the final seven minutes as the squads exchanged rushes. Gabrielle David had several of those shots, though the attempts either went wide or were tipped away before another Clarkson player could follow up on the rebound.

Cornell finally put an end to the game after nearly 85 minutes of play. Alysa Regalado started things off 120 feet away from Clarkson goal, but skated into the neutral zone and knocked a pass off the boards to Claudia Yu. Skating deep into the Clarkson defensive zone, Yu then sent a centering pass into the slot where it missed a few Cornell sticks, eventually finding Regalado who had followed up her initial pass. Regalado's shot was stopped by Pasiechnyk, but the rebound found the stick of Georgia Schiff, who was able to knock in the loose puck at 4:59 of the second overtime period.

The two teams tied in shots 43-43, and the Knights won the battle of face offs, 50-35. Pasiechnyk made 41 saves for Clarkson while Deanna Fraser denied 42 shots for Cornell. Clarkson was 1-for-3 on the power play and the Big Red went scoreless in two chances on the power play.
