Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Three-Goal Third Gives Knights a 4-0 Win Over Robert Morris

Potsdam, NY – Even distribution of goal scorers was again the rule of the day for the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team as four players found the back of the net for the Golden Knights in a 4-0 victory over Robert Morris University Friday afternoon at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights remained unbeaten at 5-0, picking up their third shutout of the season thus far, while the Colonials fell to 3-2. The two teams will meet again on Saturday afternoon at Cheel, with a scheduled 2:00 pm puck drop.

The first period saw the Golden Knights possess the puck in their offensive end for much of the period, finishing with a 31-4 edge in shots overall, though that number dipped to 14-1 in shots on goal. The best few chances came late in the period, including near misses from Haley Winn and Caroline Goffredo.

At the start of the second, the Knights again had some solid opportunities, the first coming 40 seconds in when Goffredo's hard shot rang off the left post. After a hooking call was made against the Colonials, the Knights went on the power play, but came away empty without getting many good looks.

The frustration for the Green and Gold finally came to an end late in the period on a seemingly innocuous restart from behind the Clarkson net. Haley Winn gained possession and skated up the middle of the ice and in the transition created a 4-on-3 when she crossed the blue line. Winn pushed the puck off to her right to Jenna Smellie, who then sent a centering pass right in front of the net. There she found the stick of Baylee Kirwan, tipping the puck past Maggie Hatch at 16:04 for a 1-0 lead.

Clarkson finished off the period, posting another dominating effort in shots (29-9) and shots on goal (13-2).

It appeared as if Clarkson might have to settle for a one-goal win with potential for some late pressure by Robert Morris, but the Knights found the back of the net twice in a short frame of time. The first of those scores came in transition again, as Clarkson goaltender Julia Minotti backhanded a pass behind the net, eventually find the stick of Andi Proulx. She chipped the puck forward off the boards to Smellie on the right side, skating into the Colonials' defensive zone. Proulx filled the lane in the center and received the puck in the slot, wristing in a shot at 9:16.

Clarkson's second goal of the period came on the power play. Time was whittling down for the Knights with an extra skater, but the puck went from the left circle to the point to the bottom of the right circle, where Jenna Goodwin then skated to the top of the circle and whipped a shot past Hatch at 12:45.

The Knights recorded an insurance goal late in the game to create the final tally. Andie Proulx picked up possession behind the Clarkson net and skated to her left to clear the puck. An odd bounce off the boards caused a Robert Morris defender to lose their footing and allowed the puck to escape the zone and on to the stick of Laidlaw for a 2-on-1. Laidlaw kept it for herself and beat Hatch at 17:14 to make it 4-0.

Clarkson finished with a 38-11 edge in shots. Julia Minotti was called upon to make 11 saves for the shutout, while Hatch denied 34 shots in the Robert Morris end.
