Knights' 11-Game Unbeaten Streak Snapped in 3-0 Loss to Cornell

Potsdam, NY – For the second straight season, Cornell University came into Cheel Arena and dealt the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team a defeat, shutting down the Golden Knights in a 3-0 decision on Friday evening.

The Golden Knights, ranked sixth in the latest USCHO.com poll, fell to 16-4-1 overall and 7-2-0 in league play, while Cornell, seventh in the polls, jumped Colgate to move into first place in the ECAC at 10-3-2 and 7-1-1.

Cornell got on the scoreboard early in the first to put the Golden Knights in an early hole. Clarkson goaltender Julia Minotti made a save and held on to the puck to allow Cornell a faceoff in the Knights' defensive zone. The Big Red never allowed the puck to escape, eventually capitalizing on a turnover. On an attempted clear to the opposite side of the ice, Piper Grober stepped in front to intercept the pass, took one more stride forward in the slot and beat Minotti before the Clarkson defense could recover, putting the Big Red up 1-0 at 4:44.

At the start of the second, both teams had a chance in front of the goal. Roughly 90 seconds in, a backhanded pass from behind the net didn't quite connect for Cornell, and only a minute later on the other end the Knights came up empty as a pass skipped through the slot without finding the stick of another Clarkson player. The Knights had a strong run in the first six minutes of the second period, but the team would come up empty, allowing Cornell's second goal to loom that much larger. Clarkson sent the puck into the Big Red's zone. One quick pass off the right side boards and another dump in got around the Clarkson defense for Delaney Fleming. From there, she took a few strides into the right circle and sent a wrist shot over Julia Minotti's left shoulder to make it 2-0 at the 14:21 mark.

Clarkson got a bit of momentum at the end of the second period when the Big Red was whistled for a penalty, but just as Hailey Winn was about to unleash a one-timer from the slot, the buzzer sounded to end the stanza. The Knights came up empty for the final 85 seconds of the power play to start the second and Clarkson was again held without a shot in another power play chance just a few minutes later. The two teams played even for the next 10 minutes before the Knights were called for an infraction, putting the team on the defensive again, but the Green and Gold closed out the penalty kill.

With a little under three minutes to go, Clarkson pulled Minotti for an extra attacker, looking to get back into the contest. However, the puck came out of the corner in the Cornell defensive zone to Avi Adam, and she skated up ice, flipping the puck into the open net from just inside the blue line on the right side boards to make it 3-0 with two minutes to go.

Cornell edged Clarkson in shots on goal at just 19-18 while the overall shots went in the Knights' favor at 44-42. Both teams came up empty in two power play opportunities. Minotti made 16 stops while Annelies Bergmann picked up her second straight shutout in Cheel with 18 saves.
