Catterall Redirects Three for Hat Trick in Knights 4-0 Win Over Harvard

Cambridge, MA – Limiting the chances on offense to a minimum, the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team capitalized on some deflections on all four of its goals, including a hat trick from Sena Catterall, to claim a 4-0 win over Harvard University on Friday night.

The Golden Knights improved to 21-10-2 and 12-8-1 in ECAC Hockey play, while the Crimson fell to 2-23-2 and 1-19-1.

It took some time for each to settle in offensively, but each team ended up with some extra open ice thanks to a 4-on-4. Harvard skated with an advantage for 18 seconds and got three of their four shots on goal in that stretch right on the doorstep. Clarkson wouldn't get much once the teams were skating even again, but it would the Knights that got on the board first.

Late in the period, Anne Cherkowski dropped a pass back to Shelby Laidlaw near the blue line at the right circle, and Laidlaw put a shot on net to test Harvard's Ainsley Tuffy. The shot never got to Tuffy, though, as Sena Catterall wisely redirected the attempt, making it 1-0 at the 17:17 mark.

In the second, Clarkson picked up two more goals, both on redirects with one of them being intentional. The first came off a turnover when a Harvard defender attempted to clear the puck off the boards on the left side, only to see Nicole Gosling close off the gap. She quickly put a shot on goal which would have gone wide, but the puck hit Harvard's Maria Pape squarely in the chest and it ended up slipping past Tuffy at 2:48. The Knights' third goal came on the power play and very early in the extra skater chance. Anne Cherkowski found Haley Winn on the right side near the top of the circle, and Winn put one on goal. Catterall was there again with a blade, craftily tipping the puck past Tuffy with a little over six minutes remaining in the second.

Clarkson ended up with an insurance goal on the power play late in the game, again coming off the stick of Catterall. Right after the Knights almost picked up a goal on a late cover in the crease, Clarkson ended up getting the fourth goal of the game anyways. Haley Winn found Nicole Gosling at the point and once again Catterall was there, maneuvering her stick just enough to create a change in trajectory, making it 4-0 at 18:21 in the third.

Holly Gruber stopped 11 shots for her fifth shutout of the season in her first action since mid-January, while Tuffy had 35 stops. Clarkson outshot Harvard 39-11 in the game with a 68-28 edge in total shots.
