Trio of Clarkson Goals in Third Clinches Bye for Knights

Hanover, NH – Three third-period goals, including two separated by just 15 seconds, helped the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team clinch home ice advantage in the ECAC Quarterfinals as the Golden Knights picked up a 4-1 win over Dartmouth on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights closed out the regular season with a 22-10-2 overall record and a 13-8-1 mark in the ECAC, while Dartmouth closed out at 5-20-3 and 3-16-3. Clarkson will await the first round results to see which team will be coming to Cheel Arena at the end of February.

Clarkson peppered Dartmouth in the early going, keeping Michaela Hesova busy between the Dartmouth pipes. This was especially true during the Golden Knights' first power play chance of the game, as Clarkson put six on Hesova, who was up to the challenge on each occasion. Hesova again denied a shot on a shorthanded try by Anne Cherkowski, as it mattered little whether the Knights were up a skater or down a skater against the Big Green. Clarkson had 12 of the first 13 total shots on goal, though Dartmouth did get a few chances on its power play and immediately after, but Holly Gruber was up to task like her counterpart, turning all attempts aside in the opening period.

Turning away all shots would not be the case for Hesova, however. Late in the period, Rhea Hicks won the faceoff in the right circle in the Dartmouth defensive end, tipping it backwards to Keira Hurry who was able to slip a wrist shot five-hole past Hesova at 17:37 in the first period.

Dartmouth tied the game about seven minutes into the second period before either had put much together offensively. The Big Green held the puck on the left side boards behind the net where Ella Inglis was able to dig it out. Inglis then snuck the puck between the legs of one Clarkson defender and tried to put it on net where it was tipped away by a Clarkson stick, but the rebound dropped to Lauren Messier in the slot where she flipped it in at 7:03.

Both teams spent plenty of time on the penalty kill and power play in the second period. Clarkson was down a skater for nearly three straight minutes with one penalty kill almost immediately followed by another, but Dartmouth was whistled for penalties back-to-back as well. In total each team had four penalties in the second as tempers began to flare late.

Dartmouth continued to skate with confidence at the start of the third period as the team looked for its second straight upset, but two goals in a stretch of 20 seconds ended those hopes. About five minutes into the stanza, Jenna Goodwin skated from the left side circle into the slot and put a backhand on net to see what would happen. Between a screen and the puck just ticking off the post, Goodwin's shot was true, making it 2-1 at 5:04. Only 15 seconds later, the Knights scored again quickly winning the faceoff and heading right back into the Dartmouth end. The puck snuck out to Nicole Gosling at the left point and she sent a centering pass to Rebecca Morissette. From the high slot, Morissette went to the top corner stick side, beating Hesova at 5:29.

Late in the contest, the Knights were whistled for a penalty and Dartmouth chose to pull its goaltender for yet another attacker, but it was still Clarkson that would score. Although Dartmouth touched up the puck on the left side boards in the Knights' defensive end, it wasn't controlled and Madison Chantler scored from 150 feet away, sneaking one in at 17:28.

Holly Gruber finished with 21 saves while Hesova stopped 47 shots in the Dartmouth crease. Clarkson ended with a 51-22 advantage in shots on goal. Both teams ended the game scoreless on the power play in nine total chances.
