Two Power Play Goals Prove the Difference in Quinnipiac's 3-1 Win Over Clarkson

Potsdam, NY – Two power play goals in the first 22 minutes and a pair of solid stands on the penalty kill allowed Quinnipiac to upend the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team in game one of the ECAC Quarterfinals on Friday afternoon at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights, ranked ninth in the country and the fourth seed in the ECAC Playoffs, fell to 22-11-2 and will need two straight wins to advance to the next round. Quinnipiac, the fifth seed in the ECAC and currently ranked 10th nationally, is one win away from the conference semifinals at 22-10-4. The initial puck drop is set for 2:00 pm on Saturday at Cheel.

Clarkson held the advantage in shots in each of the three periods, but it was Quinnipiac that would be opportunistic with its goals. After a slashing penalty was called, the Bobcats were on the power play near the end of the first period. Clarkson was doing a solid job on the penalty kill and sent the pass into the Quinnipiac defensive zone, but a long pass to the opposite blue line allowed Kahlen Lamarche to reset the offense quickly. She took a few strides in and dropped a pass back to Maddy Samoskevich, who then skated up to the left circle and took a shot. Laurence Frenette was there for the tip-in at 18:48, giving Quinnipiac the early lead.

Less than three minutes of game time later, Quinnipiac scored a second goal, again on the power play at the start of the second. This time the faceoff was won and dropped back to the slot for a shot, but it was initially denied. However, Frenette was there again to tap in the rebound at 1:17.

A few moments later, Clarkson was in a good spot to get back into it thanks to two straight penalties on the Bobcats, allowing the Knights a 5-on-3 for 1:50. Though a few shots went on to the cage, Kaley Doyle was able to make the stops when necessary, and Quinnipiac was able to escape the two-player deficit without giving up a goal. That proved costly for the Knights as the Bobcats tacked on an insurance goal at 14:50 when Maya Labad won a race to the puck near blue line and skated in alone with Clarkson defenders on her heels, beating Gruber top shelf and stick side, making it 3-0.

Clarkson would end the Bobcats' shutout bid early on in the third period. An attempted clearance by the Bobcats was intercepted by Haley Winn, and she skated into the right circle to draw defenders. Winn's quick pass through the slot and across the crease found Rhea Hicks on the doorstep, as Hicks let no one near her on a quick tap in at 13:40.

The Knights would have their chances in the third, and none were more significant than in the final three minutes when Quinnipiac was whistled for a major penalty with 2:52 to go. Clarkson took a timeout at 2:10 and pulled Gruber to create a 6-on-4 opportunity, but despite eight shots, the Knights could not get one past Doyle to create further excitement and mayhem in the last seconds.

Clarkson finished with a 40-26 lead in shots on goal and a 74-44 lead in total shots, though the Knights did have eight during the game-ending major penalty. Quinnipiac went 2-for-2 on the power play while the Knights were 0-for-3. Gruber stopped 23 shots for the Knights and Doyle picked up 39 saves for Quinnipiac.
