Clarkson Returns From Break with Record Day in 15-0 Win Over Saint Michael's

Potsdam, NY – More than a dozen players recorded multi-point games on Friday for the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team, as the Golden Knights began 2026 with a lopsided 15-0 win over Saint Michael's College on Friday evening at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights, ranked 11th in the most recent USCHO.com poll, improved to 12-6-2 on the season while Saint Michael's fell to 1-16-0. The two teams will play again on Saturday afternoon.

A season ago, Clarkson beat the Purple Knights by a combined score of 23-0 in two games in Vermont, recording 172 shots on goal in the two contests, the two highest figures ever (89 and 83) for the program. The Knights' 15 goals in the contest broke the single-game record for the program, topping the 14 that Clarkson tallied in game two against the Purple Knights last year.

Friday's contest appeared to be on a similar track, as the scoring was fast and furious from the drop of the puck in the first period with the Golden Knights posting eight goals in the opening frame. Raedyn Spademan had the first goal just 92 seconds into the contest as she crashed the net off a rebound that bounced off the back boards from a shot at the point by Andrea Trnkova. Less than a minute later, Greta Brezenski scored her first collegiate goal, finding the back of the net in the slot off a centering pass by Bridget Stevenson. Only 70 seconds later the third goal went in for the Knights as Megan McKay ripped a shot from the point, with the assist going to Janelle Evans at 3:38.

It took more than two minutes for the Knights to find the back of the net for their fourth goal, as a turnover in the neutral zone was picked up by Shelby Laidlaw and she found Jenna Smellie for the score at 5:59. The fifth marker of the contest came thanks to an extended defensive stretch by St. Michael's following an icing. Brezenski knocked in her second goal of the game, slapping the puck in off her own rebound in front of the crease at 9:01.

Clarkson waited another four minutes for goals six and seven, but those two came in rapid succession. Smellie found Sara Manness in the left circle, and she ripped a shot over the shoulder of the Purple Knights goaltender at 13:35. The following faceoff resulted in another goal for the Knights, as Manness won the faceoff and then skated up ice for another shot in the slot, going over the right shoulder to the opposite post only nine seconds later, with assists going to Evans and Manon le Scodan. The Golden Knights scored one more goal to close out the period as Kate Manness and Smellie worked a give-and-go with under four minutes to go to make it 8-0.

Although the Knights scored their ninth goal of the game just 13 seconds into the second period off 2-on-1 with Rhea Hicks and Sena Catterall, St. Michael's began to play a higher level of defense, blocking shots and denying the Golden Knights on the power play after allowing nine straight even-strength goals. It took more than 10 minutes for Clarkson to find the back of the net to reach double digits. Andrea Trnkova jumped in front of her own net to pull the puck back down to the ice and worked it from her own stick over to Madison Chantler. The puck was then sent over to Sena Catterall on the left side, where she worked her way across the slot and flipped in a backhand at 10:23.

A little over two minutes later, Clarkson picked up its 11th goal of the contest. Lara Beecher took a shot from the left circle that was denied, but Jenna Smellie gained possession on the right side and then found Laidlaw on the opposite side of the crease for a wide open attempt, scoring at 12:34.

The third period opened slowly for Clarkson, but the Knights did score twice within a stretch of just 20 seconds near the midway point of the frame. The first came when Janelle Evans scored in the slot, unmarked on a quick transition at 7:35. The next tally came at 7:54, when Rhea Hicks picked up a pass from Catterall in front of the net near the right circle and knocked in the puck while being clipped down, helping the senior produce her third point of the game.

Clarkson closed out the game with a power play goal in the final 90 seconds, breaking the program's record for goals in a contest. Trnkova, Manon le Scodan, and Megan McKay combined for a tick-tack-toe goal with McKay picking up her second goal of the contest.

Trnkova finished with five assists, Jenna Smellie added four points on a goal and three assists, and Janelle Evans matched Smellie's effort as well. Sara Manness also tallied a hat trick for Clarkson.

Arianne Leblanc and Holly Gruber each denied four shots in the Clarkson crease, combining for the shutout. For McKenna Dans had 19 saves in the opening period and Annika Lavender ended with 32 saves over the last two periods. Clarkson ended with a 66-8 edge in shots on goal and a 106-16 leads in shots overall.
