Clarkson Falls by One at Merrimack


A one-goal loss on the road completed a tough weekend offensively for the Clarkson University Hockey team in North Andover, MA on Saturday afternoon as the Golden Knights dropped their second game to Merrimack College, 2-1, after being shut out 3-0 by the Warriors on Friday.

Clarkson, which stands at 5-7-4 overall, will look to regain its momentum when its resumes ECAC Hockey play next weekend with a game against its archrival. The Knights, who defeated Quinnipiac (2-1) and Princeton (4-0) at Cheel Arena on November 21-21 prior to the non-league series at Hockey East's Merrimack, plays St. Lawrence in Canton on Saturday, December 6. Clarkson has played in 10 games this season decided by one goal-or-less, going 2-4-4.

Similar to Friday's game, the Green and Gold held the edge in shots, 24-19, but could not capitalize on enough of their opportunities to pull out a win on the road. Clarkson was 1-of-4 on the power play and killed off all four of Merrimack's man-advantage opportunities. Sophomore Steve Perry (Ligonier, PA) made 17 saves in his fourth straight start in the Knights' net.

After a scoreless first period in which Clarkson held a 6-3 shot advantage, Merrimack (10-4-1) took the lead when Chris LeBlanc skated in front and slipped in his second goal of the weekend at 11:20.

The Knights came back to tie with their only goal of the two-game series late in the middle frame. Nine seconds into Clarkson's third power-play of the night, junior Pat Megannety (Oakville, ONT) won an offensive zone faceoff back to freshman Nic Pierog (Georgetown, ONT). The rookie fired in a low shot through traffic with 1:26 remaining in the period for the power-play tally and his third career goal to snap a Clarkson scoring drought against Merrimack at 170:52.

The Warriors wasted little time in regaining the lead to start the third. Just 48 seconds into the final frame, Alfred Larsson picked up a bouncing puck behind the Clarkson net and was able to stuff a shot from the goal line past Perry for the game-winner.
