Golden Knights Travel to Boston University for Weekend Set

PDF of weekly release

For the third time in the past four seasons, the fourth-ranked Clarkson University Women's Hockey team has started its season with five wins in five games. The Golden Knights will try to continue that streak when they travel to Boston for two games against the ninth-ranked Boston University Terriers.

Led by eighth year head coach Matt Desrosiers and second-year assistant coaches Britni Smith and Meghan Duggan, Clarkson owns a perfect 5-0-0 record this season. The Green and Gold have outshot their opponents in all five games and have not allowed a power-play goal thus far.

Last weekend saw Clarkson sweep Vermont in a home-and-home series. On Friday in Burlington, Clarkson defeated the Catamounts 5-0. Freshmen Kelly Mariani and Rhyen McGill scored two goals apiece with senior assistant captain Renata Fast adding a power-play goal. Sophomore goaltender Shea Tiley made 12 saves in her second shutout of the season. On Saturday, the Golden Knights returned home and came away with a 3-0 victory. Senior assistant captain Olivia Howe opened the scoring with a power-play goal, before freshmen Josiane Pozzebon and Loren Gabel added scores. In her first career start, junior goaltender McKenzie Johnson made 15 saves in a shutout effort.

For her performances this week, McGill was named the ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week. McGill finished with four points this weekend. She scored the two goals in Friday's game as well as adding an assist in the victory. McGill also scored the opening goal in Clarkson's 3-1 victory at Syracuse last Tuesday night. McGill also scored the game-winning goal in a 3-2 victory at St. Lawrence on 10/3 and has five points in five games.

Junior assistant captain Cayley Mercer is the leading-scorer for the Green and Gold. She has eight points this year, after leading the team with 44 points during the 2014-15 season. Mercer is one of only two Clarkson skaters who have notched a point in all five games this year, with Harmon being the other. Mercer bagged two assists on Friday and then added another on Saturday. She now has three goals and five assists. She is 17th in the country in points per game and is tied for 17th in assists per game.

Harmon is second on the team with six points from the blueline. She has scored two goals and added four assists, and with an assist in all three games last weekend, as well as playing an integral role in a defense that allowed just one goal, she was selected to the conference honor roll for the week. She is ninth in the country in points per game among defensemen.

The two goaltenders on Clarkson's roster combined to keep Vermont off the scoreboard over 120 minutes of action. Tiley started the Friday game and made 12 saves en route to her second shutout of the season and the 11th of her career. On Saturday, Johnson made her first career start and made fifteen saves to polish off her first ever shutout. For her efforts, Johnson was named to the ECAC Hockey Weekly Honor Roll.

Clarkson has outshout its opponents for five straight games for the first time since the Golden Knights did it six straight times between 12/5/14 and 1/17/15. The Green and Gold are 18-5-1 in October games over the last three seasons.

Offensively, the six freshmen have contributed 29% of Clarkson's scoring, with the first-year players racking up 14 points. McGill leads the way with five points while Gabel and Mariani both have three. Emma Keenan has a pair of assists with Pozzebon scoring a goal. Cassidy Vinkle is the last skater on the Clarkson roster without a collegiate point.

Boston University comes into the weekend with a 3-1-0 record and is ranked ninth in both polls. The Terriers split a series with Penn State last weekend, losing 5-3 on Friday before coming back with a 3-1 win on Saturday. Boston University is tied for tenth nationally in scoring offense with three goals per game and is all alone in tenth place in scoring defense as the Terriers have allowed 2.25 goals per game. Rebecca Leslie is the leading scorer for BU, with her eight points in four games putting her in a tie for fourth in the country in points per game. Rebecca Russo is not too far behind her with six points on three goals and three assists.

Clarkson is 1-5-1 against BU in their all-time series. Last season saw the two teams meet twice in Cheel with the Terriers leaving with 3-1 and 5-2 victories. The only Clarkson win in the series came in 2009 when the Golden Knights earned a 7-2 win. Overall, Clarkson is 0-3 in Walter Brown Arena.
