Clarkson Men's Hockey Returns to Cheel

Returning to Cheel Arena for the first time since December 3 the Clarkson University Hockey team will look to make the most of a three-game home stand as it strives to move up for a top four position in the ECAC Hockey standings. The Golden Knights, guided by sixth-year head coach Casey Jones and assistants Phil Roy '00 and Josh Hauge, host Capital District foes Union and Rensselaer this weekend. Game times are 7:00 p.m. Clarkson will host the annual Teddy Bear Toss during Saturday's game against the Engineers.

With nine games remaining in the regular season, the Knights stand at 11-10-4 overall and are in sixth place in the ECAC Hockey standings with a 6-5-2 league mark. This past weekend in the always tough trip to Central NY, the Green and Gold managed to gain one point. Clarkson skated to a 3-3 tie at Cornell before surrendering a lead to Colgate in a 3-2 loss.

ECAC Hockey Standings

•  The Knights hold a 30-25-5 advantage in their all-time series against Union and are coming off two big wins in the series. Clarkson snapped a six-game losing skid to the 2014 National Champions with a 4-1 victory at Messa Rink on February 5 and followed it up with a 3-1 triumph on November 12. Those were the Green and Gold's first regular-season victories at Union since January 13, 2001.
•  In a heated rivalry, which dates back to the 1924-25 campaign, Clarkson leads the overall series against Rensselaer 90-50-11. The Green and Gold are 3-0-1 in the last four meetings, including wins in the past three. The Knights have outscored the Engineers 11-3 in a pair of victories this season. Clarkson defeated RPI in Troy 5-2 on November 11 and overwhelmed the Engineers in Lake Placid 6-1 on January 7.
•  Clarkson closes out the current home stand on February 4 against St. Lawrence. The Knights are 4-6-1 at Cheel this season.
•  Clarkson's power play is clicking at a high rate in the New Year, going 7-of-23 (33%) through the first five games of 2017. The Knights have scored at least one power-play goal in each of the last five games, including a pair of two-goal outings on the man-advantage. Clarkson has scored two-power play goals in a game six times this season.  Overall, Clarkson is ranked 19th in the nation on the power play at 19.5% (23-118). The Green and Gold own the top power play in ECAC Hockey, clicking at 25.5% (12-47) in league action.
•  The Knights' shorthanded unit had a stretch of successful kills end at 16 on Saturday at Cornell. The Big Red scored the first power-play goal against Clarkson in 2017 just 49 seconds into the third period for the tying goal in the 3-3 draw. The next night at Colgate, the Green and Gold shut down the Raiders on four of their five opportunities, but the home team scored the game-winning goal on their last chance for the 3-2 victory. Overall, Clarkson has killed off 125-of-148 opponent man-advantage opportunities (84.5%), good for 22nd out of 60 Division I teams. 
• Junior Sam Vigneault has a six-game point streak with 11 points on three goals and eight assists during that span. He leads Clarkson in points with 24, including a team-high 17 assists.
• Jordan Boucher recorded his third game of the season scoring two-or-more goals with the Knights' first two tallies in the tie at Cornell on Friday. He is second on Clarkson in scoring with 21 points (9-12) and is tied with Vigneault for most points (63) of any current Clarkson player.   
• Nico Sturm shares with Devin Brosseau the scoring lead among Clarkson freshmen with 16 points. Sturm has tallied six goals and 10 assists through 25 games of his rookie campaign. He has three goals in the past three games. Sturm is the Knights' top center on faceoffs, winning 54.9% of his draws (173-142). 
• After going six games without a point, freshman Sheldon Rempal tallied his second goal in the past three games with the Knights' opening score, an unassisted power-play marker at Colgate on Saturday. He has seven goals and eight assists through 25 games.
• Junior assistant captain Brett Gervais recorded his first point in 12 games with a power-play goal at Cornell. He has three goals and three assists this season.
• Senior defenseman, captain James de Haas has been selected as one of 15 top NCAA men's ice hockey student-athletes who excels both on and off the ice, and is a candidate for the 2016-17 Senior CLASS Award® in collegiate hockey. The Detroit Red Wings draft choice leads the Green and Gold in scoring from the blueline with 13 points on four goals and nine assists. de Haas has one assist in each of the last three games. 
• Senior Troy Josephs, leads Clarkson with ten goals through 23 games this season. He had ten goals in 97 games during his first three years.  The Pittsburgh Penguins draft choice has 14 points (9-5) in his last 15 games, and 17 points (10-7) overall as Clarkson's third leading scorer. Josephs shares the team lead in plus-minus at +7 with sophomore Juho Jokiharju.
• Freshman goaltender Jake Kielly has started 22 of Clarkson's first 25 games, including   the last 15, and posts a .917 save percentage and a 2.63 goals against average along with two shutouts. 
• Clarkson's Class of 2020 is the top producing freshman class in ECAC Hockey and is tied for seventh overall in the NCAA, averaging 2.68 points per game.  The Knights' seven rookie skaters, and Kielly (one assist) have accounted for 33% of Clarkson's offense with 67 points on 25 goals and 42 assists. 
• The Knights are only 5-4 when outshooting opponents, and 6-5-3 when being outshot. 
• Clarkson is tied for 25th in the PairWise Rankings.
• Clarkson was ranked 15th among the Top 25 College Hockey Programs of All Time by HERO Sports - http://herosports.com/
• Four current Golden Knights have been selected in the NHL Draft – de Haas (2012 Detroit - 6th rd, 170),  Terrance Amorosa (2013 Philadelphia - 5th rd, 189), Josephs (2013 Pittsburgh - 7th rd, 209) and Kelly Summers (2014 Ottawa - 7th rd, 189).
• Recent grad, Kevin Tansey '16, participated in the CCM/East Coast Hockey League All-Star Classic on January 17-18 in Glens Falls, NY.  Tansey is a defenseman for the Missouri Mavericks.

Scouting Union
Since losing to Clarkson 3-1 on November 12 in Schenectady Union has been on a tear winning six straight ECAC Hockey games and nine of its last 11 overall. Guided by sixth-year head coach Rick Bennett the Dutchmen are ranked 5th in the national polls with a 17-5-2 overall record and stand in first place in ECAC Hockey with a 10-1-1 conference mark. Union won its third straight game with a 3-2 overtime, non-league triumph against Capital District rival Rensselaer in the Mayor's Cup this past Thursday at the Times Union Center. Beside the loss to Clarkson, the only other league blemish for the Dutchmen was a 2-2 tie against St. Lawrence on November 11. Union suffered back-to-back losses to national powerhouses North Dakota (3-1) and Boston University (5-4ot) prior to their current winning streak. The Dutchmen are 10-3-1 away from Achilles Rink.

Boasting one of the top offenses in the country, averaging 3.79 goals per game, Union has two of the top scorers in the nation. Mike Vecchione (18-23) and Spencer Foo (16-25) pace the Dutchmen's attack with 41 points apiece. Alex Sakellaropoulos has seen the bulk of the action in the Union crease, sporting a .922 save percentage and a 2.39 goals against average en route to a 16-3-1 record.
 
Scouting Rensselaer
Rensselaer has struggled through a disastrous season in 2016-17, but has shown signs of turning it around in recent games. The Engineers, guided by 11th-year head coach Seth Appert, stunned Top-5 ranked Harvard 4-0 in Troy on January 13 in its first ECAC Hockey game of the New Year, and then came up just short to Union on January 19 with the overtime loss in the Mayor's Cup. Rensselaer, which plays at St. Lawrence on Friday, owns a 4-21-1 overall record and a 12th-place 2-11-0 ECAC mark. RPI is 1-13 away from Houston Filed House. The Engineers' lone road win was a 2-0 victory at Arizona State on November 26. 

Evan Tironese paces the RPI offense with 22 points, including 18 assists. Riley Bourbonnais has scored a team-high 10 goals to go along with seven assists. Chase Perry is the Engineers' go-to-guy between the pipes with a .903 save percentage and a 3.58 goals against average en route to a 2-13-1 record, including one shutout.

The Series:

Fossen supplied the goals. The Dutchmen are 22-16-3 against Clarkson in games played during the 2000s, including a 7-3 mark in the last 10 meetings.  Union's last win in the series was a 4-1 victory in Potsdam on November 7, 2015. The Knights hold a 15-9-1 advantage over Union at Cheel.

Perry D'Arrisso has a team-high two goals against the Dutchmen. Sheldon Rempal leads in points with three assists. Kielly posts a .973 save percentage and a 1.00 goals against average through one game. Steve Perry has a .852 save percentage and a 4.11 GAA in three losses against Union.

The Knights have outscored the Engineers 11-3 in a pair of wins this season.  The Knights scored three, third-period goals to knock off RPI 5-2 in ECAC Hockey action in Troy on November 11.  Five different Knights scored in the win and Juho Jokiharju recorded three assists. Clarkson skated to a 6-1 non-league victory over the Engineers on January 7. Sam Vigneault tallied two goals and two assists, while Haralds Egle netted two goals.  The Knights have taken three of four league points from RPI in each of the past two regular seasons. The Engineers, however, defeated the Green and Gold two games to one (3-2, 0-5, 3-1) in the 2015 ECAC Hockey first round series played at Cheel. Overall in the last 10 meetings, Clarkson holds a 5-2-3 advantage. Clarkson is 16-11-4 over RPI at Cheel.

Vigneault has recorded a team-high eight points in the series against with four goals and four assists. Terrance Amorosa also has a team-high four goals to go along with two assists. A. J. Fossen and Troy Josephs  have seven points each against the Engineers with two goals and five assists apiece. Jake Kielly holds a .933 save percentage and a 1.50 GAA in two games. Steve Perry has played in five games in goal and holds a .910 save percentage, a 1.80 GAA and 2-1-1 record, including two shutouts in the series.
