Clarkson Opens ECAC Hockey Action in Capital District

With a successful conclusion to the season-opening, non-league portion of the schedule, Clarkson University takes to the road to begin ECAC Hockey play with a trip to NY's Capital District region.

Guided by ninth-year Head Coach Casey Jones, Associate Coach Josh Hauge and Assistant Coach Mike Towns, the Golden Knights battle Union College at Messa Rink in Schenectady on Friday and then face long-time rival Rensselaer at Houston Field House in Troy, NY on Saturday. Both games are 7:00 p.m. faceoffs.

Clarkson has some momentum going into conference action ranked 8/9th in the national polls with a 5-2-1 overall record. The Green and Gold have won three of their last four games and are coming off a pair of thrilling overtime victories against their archrival in Potsdam. Clarkson defeated St. Lawrence 4-3 and 3-2 in extra session action at Cheel Arena this past weekend. 
• Clarkson's offense is tied for 26th in the nation, but the Green and Gold are getting a very balanced effort with 17 players recording at least one point and with 10 Knights scoring at least one goal.
• In the weekend sweep of St. Lawrence, six different players accounted for Clarkson's seven goals and 13 Knights picked up at least one point.
• ECAC Player of the Month, Josh Dunne leads the way offensively for the Green and Gold with an overall league-high five goals and 11 points. The sophomore center tallied on the power play for the opening goal on Saturday and netted the overtime game-winner 89 seconds into the extra session for his third career two-goal outing. He also recorded one assist.
• Clarkson's Captain, Devin Brosseau is second on the team in scoring with nine points on three goals and six assists through six games. Since missing the opening two games with an injury, the center has strung together a team-leading five game-point streak. ECAC Hockey Student-Athlete of the Year last season and a graduate student this year, Brosseau is closing in on the century mark with 92 points on 35 goals and 57 assists through 122 games.
• Third on the Knights in scoring, senior right wing Haralds Egle has seven points and five assists. An ECAC Hockey preseason all-star, the Latvia native has a current four-game point streak (2-4) and a team-best +5 plus/minus rating. Egle has tallied 80 career points (32-48) in 111 games.
• Three Knights – juniors Zach Tsekos (3-2) and Jack Jacome (1-4) and sophomore Brian Hurley (1-4) have recorded five points each.
• Hurley is the only Clarkson defenseman to score a goal this season. He netted the Knights' third goal in Fridays' 4-3 overtime win against St. lawrence and also had an assist.
• Anthony Callin's first goal of the season and first career game-winner will certainly be remember. The sophomore center scored the deciding goal 1:48 into overtime to lift Clarkson to a 4-3 victory against St. Lawrence on Friday. 
• Frank Marotte, the graduate transfer form Robert Morris has certainly made a big impression for the Golden Knights in the crease. Marotte was named ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Month for October. Having played every minute in the Clarkson goal, Marotte posts a the best overall save percentage (.937) in the league, third best goals against average (2.10) and the best winning percentage (.688%, 5-2-1) among league goaltenders who have played more than three games. He has one one shutout - a 38-save effort in 4-0 victory at nationally-ranked Wisconsin (10/25).
• Anthony Romano leads Clarkson's freshman class in scoring. The 2019 Arizona Coyotes draft selection has three goals and four points. He scored the Knights' second goal in Saturday's win over St. Lawrence.
• The Knights' eight-member sophomore class leads the way offensively for the Green and Gold with nine goals and 13 assists for 34% of Clarkson's scoring.
• Clarkson is second in the country for combined specialty teams play, (42-68, 61.8%) boosted by the Knights' 6th-ranked shorthanded effort. Clarkson has allowed just two power-play goals on 39 opponent man-advantage opportunities (94.9%). The Green and Gold have killed off 20 straight, including all 10 of St. Lawrence's power play over the weekend. Providence was the last team to connect on the man-advantage, scoring with just 14 seconds left in their last power play on October 19.

The series:
The Knights hold a 33-27-5 advantage in their all-time series against Union. After a strong surge by the Dutchmen over the last 10 years, the Green and Gold have begun to reclaim the advantage in the series and have won five of the last seven meetings. The teams split last season with each winning on its home ice. Union edged the Green and Gold 3-2 in Schenectady last November 3, while Clarkson skated to a 5-1 triumph in Potsdam on January 11. Clarkson swept the series in 2017-18, winning 3-2 at Cheel on November 17, 2017 and 4-1 at Messa Rink on January 12, 2018. The series is tied 16-16-4 at Messa Rink.  Devin Brosseau has a team-high six points in the rivalry with three goals and three assists. Haralds Egle has four points and two goals. Jack Jacome also has four points and a team-high three assists.

Clarkson has won eight straight over Rensselaer and leads the overall series, which dates back to the 1924-25 campaign, 97-51-11. Clarkson has won 10 of the last 11 over the Engineers. The Knights have outscored RPI 22-2 in their last five meetings. Last season the Green and Gold won 6-0 at Houston Filed House in early November and 5-2 at Cheel in mid-January. The Engineers snapped a scoreless stretch to the Knights of 279:07 in that loss. The Engineers' last win over Clarkson was a 2-1 victory at Cheel on January 28, 2017. Their last victory in Troy was a 5-0 victory on March 1, 2013.  Haralds Egle (4-5) has 11 points against RPI on four goals and seven assists.  

Scouting Union
After a three-game road trip where it picked up its first wins of the season, Union returns to Messa Rink looking to get in the win column on its home ice. The Dutchmen, who are 0-4 at home, stand at 2-8 overall and 1-1 in ECAC Hockey. Union opened the month of November on different ends of shutouts in Western NY. On Friday, the Dutchmen blanked Canisius 3-0, but fell on Saturday 4-0. Union began ECAC Hockey action on October 25-26 by splitting a pair of one-goal games against travel partner RPI, losing the first game 3-2 in Schenectady before winning 2-1 in Troy. The Dutchmen have played some top teams in the nation, dropping a pair of 2-1 games at home to Northeastern and losing two at Massachusetts (6-1, 5-0). Union, which is tied for 54th in the nation for offense, has been outscored 33-15. 


Scouting Rensselaer
Rensselaer, which hosts St. Lawrence on Friday, stands at 3-3 overall and 1-1 in league play. The Engineers were off last weekend after splitting their ECAC Hockey openers against Union (3-2 win, 2-1 loss) on October 25-26. RPI is 1-2 at Houston Field House, winning 7-2 over Canisius on October 19 and losing to UConn, 5-2 on October 18 and Union. The Engineers have outscored their opponents 21-19.
