Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Knights Hold On For 2-1 Win Over Canisius

Potsdam, NY – For the final 2:40 of the contest, the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team was enduring pressure while down a skater or more, but the Golden Knights' defense held up for a 2-1 victory over Canisius to open the 2024-25 season Saturday evening at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights, picking up their first victory under first-year head coach JF Houle, will be back in action tomorrow afternoon when they face RIT.

Clarkson was whistled for a boarding infraction at the 17:20 mark of the third period, and the Golden Griffins decided to use the opportunity to also pull their goalie for a 6-on-4 attack. For that two-minute stretch, Canisius was able to get five shots off, but two went wide, two were denied by Clarkson goaltender Ethan Langenegger, and another was blocked. While up one extra skater with the goalie pulled, Canisius was able to get just one more shot off, but it was blocked by Trey Taylor and the Knights went the other way, killing off the final seconds in the Golden Griffins defensive zone.

The first goal of the game came in the opening period off a reset in the Clarkson defensive zone. Behind the net, Ty Brassington began the rush with a pass to Kaelen Taylor on the right side. Taylor then slid a pass to Talon Sigurdson, who took a few strides and ripped a hard wrist shot from just inside the circle on the right wing side. The puck knocked off the opposite post and in at 11:37 to give Clarkson a 1-0 lead.

At the start of the second, the Golden Knights scored their second goal of the contest, with a similarly slow start off a reset behind the net. This time Ryan Taylor began the play with a long pass to Ellis Rickwood down the right side. Rickwood carried the puck into the Canisius defensive zone and drew some attention on the right side while Ayrton Martino skated nearly unmarked in the slot. Martino finished off the transition play with one quick move after accepting the pass from Rickwood, scoring just 49 seconds into the second period.

Canisius would cut the margin to win midway through the second period. After going scoreless in a power play opportunity, the Golden Griffins would take the puck from their own defensive end and start a rush. Alton McDermott had the puck in the slot and tried to send a pass to Kyle Haskins on the left side near the crease, but the pass bounced off Haskins skate right back to McDermott, who calmly backhanded the puck into the net at 12:22.

The goal seemed to invigorate Canisius as the Golden Griffins produced more pressure on the Clarkson defense. However, Langenegger was always strong in the crease, making some solid glove saves and denying other shots with his blockers, finishing the period with five saves after the goal.

Clarkson had its chances to pick up an insurance goal in the third period thanks to two Canisius penalties, but the Golden Knights came up empty in both opportunities. Fortunately for Clarkson, the Knights' defensive corps were up to the challenge in the final moments as well with the Green and Gold securing the win.

Clarkson finished with a 28-25 edge in shots on goal, and both teams were scoreless on the power play, Clarkson going 0-for-2 and Canisius ending up 0-for-3. Ethan Langenegger made 24 stops for the Knights, and Ethan Robertson had 26 saves for Canisius.
