Potsdam, NY – Some standout individual performances have both the men and women of the Clarkson University Swimming & Diving team in striking distance of the overall team title at the midway point of the annual North Country Invitational, hosted by SUNY Potsdam at Maxcy Hall.

The Golden Knights' men have scored 269 points through 24 events, 25 short of Saint Michael's (294) and ahead of Roberts Wesleyan (193), Norwich (150), and SUNY Potsdam (10), while the Clarkson women have more work to do to catch up to first as they have 205 points, trailing Saint Michael's (378.5) but outpacing Roberts Wesleyan (168), Norwich (150.5), and SUNY Potsdam (24).

Three Clarkson men won individual events during Friday's afternoon session. The first was Gavin Stuhler, who took the top spot in the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.54 seconds, just ahead of his teammate Andrew Sypko (22.54) who claimed the runner-up spot. Andrew Sammons picked up first-place points for the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:01.33, and he was joined by teammate Matthew Sitarek in the top five, as Sitarek finished fourth in 1:02.81. The top two scores went to Clarkson's divers in the 1-meter event, as Gavin Cibelli recorded 263.40 points for first place and Carter Lancto had a score of 1943.35 for second.

Clarkson had plenty of others in the top five of the races on Friday as well. Owen White was runner-up in the 200 individual medley (2:01.97), off by just 1.24 seconds in that event. Evan Paneras (51.19) and Landon Colby (53.41) finished second and third, respectively, in the 100 butterfly, and both Casey Everett (500 freestyle, 4:55.71) and Mason Cartier (200 backstroke, 2:04.22) took fifth in their races.

On the women's side, the Golden Knights' lone first-place finisher was sophomore Aurora Zary, as she won the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:19.72. Natasha Hurff opened the individual events for the Knights with a third-place showing in the 500 freestyle, finishing that race in 5:34.63. The 200 individual medley saw two Clarkson swimmers in the top five as Fiona Reilly took fourth (2:27.25) and Paige Davis was just behind her in fifth (2:27.33). Evelyn Vieira also placed fourth in the women's 3-meter diving event, scoring 209.40 points.

The North Country Invitational will resume at 10:00 am on Saturday.
