Zary Wins Backstroke Race Again to Lead Knights at NCI

Evan Paneras had three top-five finishes this weekend at the North Country Invitational

Potsdam, NY – Sophomore Aurora Zary won her second race of the weekend and Gavin Cibelli claimed the top score in another diving event to headline the Clarkson University Swimming & Diving team's performance on day two of the North Country Invitational, hosted by SUNY Potsdam at Maxcy Hall.

The Golden Knights' men finished in second place with 559 points, coming up just short of catching Saint Michael's (614) and ahead of Roberts Wesleyan (413), Norwich (310), and SUNY Potsdam (24), while the women also placed second with 378 points, nudging Roberts Wesleyan by 15 points (363) and Norwich by 31.5 points (346.5). Saint Michael's won the NCI with 707.5 points.

Clarkson's only victory on the women's side went to Aurora Zary, her second win of the weekend, placing first in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:04.77, topping the second place finisher by a full second. Paige Davis closed out the 400 individual medley with a runner-up finish, touching the pad in 5:18.68. Fiona Reilly also finished in the top five for the Knights, placing fifth in the 200 breaststroke (2:46.78).

Evelyn Vieira repeated her placement in the 1-meter dive on Saturday, taking fourth, just as she did on Friday in the 3-meter. Vieira's score in the shorter board was 194.30.

Like Vieira, Gavin Cibelli and Carter Lancto also repeated their spots from Friday. Cibelli had the top score in the 3-meter on Saturday with 253.30 points while Lancto was the runner-up with 196.45 points.

Clarkson had a number of participants in the runner-up spot on Saturday. Casey Everett opened the meet with a second-place finish in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 17:10.28. Owen White just missed out on the 400 individual medley by a little over a second with a time of 4:24.90, and Andrew Sammons took second in the 200 breaststroke (2:16.40), falling short by .61 seconds.

The Golden Knights had other close calls, as Gavin Stuhler was third in the 100 freestyle (49.70, off by roughly one-third of a second. Evan Paneras took third in the 200 butterfly (1:59.48) and Matthew Sitarek was third in the 200 breaststroke (2:18.76). Other Clarkson swimmers in the top five were Andrew Sypko (100 freestyle, fifth), Mason Cartier (100 backstroke, fourth), Paneras (200 freestyle, fourth), and Stuhler (200 freestyle, fifth).
