Langenegger Makes 24 Big Stops in 3-1 Win Over Cornell

Ithaca, NY – Graduate student Ethan Langenegger made some highlight reel stops among his 24 saves for the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team, as the 19th-ranked Golden Knights skated to a 3-1 ECAC Hockey win over Cornell University on Friday evening at Lynah Rink.

The victory lifted the Green and Gold to 19-9-3 overall and 13-5-1 in the ECAC, an important one that allowed Clarkson to keep pace with the rest of the top four in the conference, while Cornell saw its chances for a bye take a hit, falling to 11-9-6 and 8-7-4. Clarkson takes on Colgate on Saturday.

Each team had its chances in the first period with Clarkson getting a power play opportunity in the first minute and Cornell closing out the frame with one of its own. The Big Red was whistled for a penalty just 17 seconds into the game, but Clarkson got just one shot off in the early going, a surprising twist for a team that has scored early in so many games in 2024-25. Both teams' defenses were locked in for much of the first period with chances making it through to the goaltenders infrequently.

The best scoring chances came in the final five minutes. Ryan Bottrill snuck below the Cornell defense and had a one-on-one with Big Red net minder Ian Shane, but he was tripped up on the doorstep by Michael Suda before getting a chance to flip the puck over Shane's extended glove. Clarkson did not score on the power play, but neither did Cornell in the final 67 seconds while up a skater. Cornell did have a solid try only to be denied by Ethan Langenegger, with Tristan Sarsland clearing the puck out of the crease and ending the danger.

Clarkson killed off the remainder of the penalty to start the second period, but both teams continued to have trouble to put shots on the cage. That changed about six minutes into the second. After a flurry of tries were denied, the puck was sent out of the zone all the way down to the left circle where Tate Taylor collected possession. He then whistled a long pass all the way back up to the far blue line for Ayrton Martino, who niftily stayed onside while skating into the zone with his back turned to the goal. A quick turn and a drop pass to the opposite side of the zone found Garrett Dahm, who whipped a shot between the legs of Ian Shane for the goal at 5:35.

Ethan Langenegger had a strong stretch late in the first period, denying a couple of shots prior to a penalty and then again standing tall on a scrum in front during a power play before covering up. However, the run of denials finally came to an end when Cornell had a break out in transition. Sullivan Mack skated hard to get behind the Clarkson defense and was able to create a one-on-one with Langenegger, going low to beat the goalie at 17:19 to tie the contest at 1-1.

In the third, it was more of Langenegger making sprawling saves to keep Cornell off the board, while the Knights' offense continued to look for ways to get around the Big Red defense. That happened with just over four minutes remaining as Clarkson got things going with a pass from Jack Sparkes to Ryan Richardson in transition. As it seems to have happened all year, Ayrton Martino was able to get behind the Cornell defense and as he was being taken down with a tripping call, he nevertheless used the very bottom edge of his stick blade to tip the puck past Shane, scoring at 15:38, his 20th goal of the season.

At the 2:30 mark, Langenegger got some help from his right post as a hard clang was heard throughout Lynah Rink, but the goalie continued to deny shots in front before Cornell would pull its goalie for the extra attacker. Clarkson ended up getting the better of that deal, however, when Ryan Richardson outskated the Big Red defense in the final minute to put the finishing touches on the win, scoring with 30.3 seconds left to make it 3-1.

Martino's two points gave him 37 on the year, one short of his career-high of 38 during his sophomore campaign, while his 20th goal of the season made him the first Clarkson player since Sheldon Rempal in the 2017-18 season to hit that mark.

Cornell outshot the Knights 56-33 overall and 25-11 in shots on goal, while both teams were scoreless on the power play. Langenegger made 24 saves for the Knights and Shane had eight stops.
