Knights Score Four in the Third to Pick Up Second Win Against Syracuse

Potsdam, NY – A flurry of goals in the first half of the third period turned a close game into a lopsided win for the fifth-ranked Clarkson University Women's Hockey team as the Golden Knights swept its series against Syracuse University with a 5-0 victory over the Orange on Saturday afternoon at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights improved to 16-0-2 on the season while Syracuse fell to 3-12-2. Clarkson closes out the 2023 portion of its schedule next weekend with games against ECAC Hockey foes Dartmouth and Harvard.

In the opening period, Clarkson picked up right where it left off from Tuesday's contest against the Orange, dominating possession and getting numerous shots on the Syracuse goal. The Knights had several lengthy stretches with the puck in the Orange defensive end, but Syracuse goaltender Allie Kelley was up to the task with several saves in the first five minutes.

Clarkson finished with a 15-6 edge in shots on goal in the first period, connecting on one with about three minutes left in the period during the team's second power-play opportunity of the frame. After Syracuse had cleared the zone and sent the puck to the other end of the ice, Clarkson quickly regrouped and returned to the Orange defensive zone. Brooke McQuigge waited for traffic in front of the goal to clear to set up the offense, finding Nicole Gosling in front. Gosling then skipped a pass to the left circle for Alexie Guay and from there Guay sent a pass down to the end line for Anne Cherkowski. At that point, McQuigge's patience a few seconds earlier paid off as Cherkowski sent the puck in front for the captain, with McQuigge connecting on a one-timer to put the Knights on the board at 16:58.

About six minutes into the second period, each team had scoring opportunities in transition. A head's up play by Clarkson goalkeeper Julia Minotti create a 3-on-1 rush towards the Syracuse goal, but Kelley stopped the puck near the post on her glove side. Almost immediately after the next faceoff, Syracuse had three skaters in front going the other way and it was Rayla Clemons with a 1-on-1 with Minotti, but Minotti made the save and then denied another off the rebound. Only 20 seconds later, Clarkson's Shelby Laidlaw had a solid opportunity from the left circle but was stopped by Kelley, ending the run of three excellent scoring chances for the two teams in a stretch of just 35 seconds. The period ended with a similar shots on goal total from the first (15-7), but this time it was a shutout for both squads.

The third period started with a 4-on-4 as both teams had penalties in the final moments of the second period. As the 4-on-4 ended, the Knights were on the power play and immediately took advantage with a 3-on-1 rush out of a switch as Anne Cherkowski finished off some quick passes at 1:22 of the third, with assists going to Darcie Lappan and Dominique Petrie. That score began a run of scoring that sent what was a close game into a blowout.

The first even-strength goal of the game came at 3:00 when Kirstyn McQuigge tried to get things going with what looked like a harmless pass in the Clarkson defensive zone to Rebecca Morissette. The freshman was a step or two inside the blue line near Clarkson's goal, but skated through the neutral zone and into the Syracuse zone, taking a wrist shot from a stride short of the dot in the left circle to beat Kelley on the stick side.

Another score on the power play came four minutes later, though Syracuse did a good job of keeping the Knights off the board for as long as it could. Kelley made several saves and the Orange made sure the Knights' offense was stalled behind the net. However, once the puck was poked loose and Alexie Guay got possession, Clarkson quickly capitalized. Guay sent a pass along the boards to Nicole Gosling, and Gosling whipped a pass to the opposite side of the ice to Haley Winn. From there, Winn adeptly passed the puck through traffic to the opposite post, finding Cherkowski on the doorstep for the goal at 6:58.

The fifth goal of the contest took some odd bounces around the rink before finding the settled stick of Laurence Frenette. Nicole Gosling dropped a pass to Haley Winn at the top of the slot and her wrist shot was wide and quickly bounced back to the end line. Gosling, who had drifted down to end line, picked up the rebound and was trying to put the puck on goal or in front for a teammate, but it ended up bounding out to Frenette at the right circle. With a wide open net thanks to the traffic on the other side, Frenette easily slapped a shot in at 9:42.

Clarkson finished with a 47-17 edge in shots on goal and was 3-for-6 on the power play while killing off three Syracuse power-play chances. Minotti stopped 17 shots for the shutout, her second of the season, while Kelley denied 42 shots in the Syracuse end.
