The Knights might have played one of their best games of the season, but wound up on the wrong end of a 3-2 decision tonight at Cheel Arena. Clarkson came out with one of their best periods of hockey this season but found themselves down 2-1 after one period of play. The Knights had a great first few shifts of pressure that led to a power play in which the Knights scored when
Trey Taylor was able to capitalize on a great feed from
Noah Beck and
Ayrton Martino.
Union would answer back with a power play goal at 8:26 from Liam Robertson. Then the Knights took the lead back...until a review initiated by Union resulted in a 5 minute major penalty assessed to
Mathieu Gosselin and the goal taken off the board. The Knights killed off the 5 minute penalty and continued to generate great pressure, but with just over a minute left in the period, the puck hit a Knights forward and bounced right to Josh Nixon who was able to jam it home to put the Dutchmen up 2-1 going into the break, despite the Knights out shooting Union 12 to 6.
The Knights would continue to get good looks, but then at 8:53 of the 3rd, another puck bounced off of a Clarkson defender and right to the stick of a Union skater and they went up 3-1. The Knights would get a power play and pull within 1 when
Ryan Taylor scored at 16:23. With the extra attacker, Clarkson again had several great chances, but could not get one to go.
The Knights out shot Union 36 to 17 and went 2 for 7 with the power play.
Ethan Haider made 14 saves in net for the Knights.
Ayrton Martino netted his 8th assist on the season, which marks his 6th game with at least a point.
Clarkson will host RPI tomorrow night, 7:00 pm puck drop at Cheel.
