CLARKSON FALLS IN OT AT RPI
Troy, NY – Twice the Knights took the lead but RPI would even the game up twice and then get the decisive goal in the extra session to knock off the Knights.Â
The teams would go scoreless in the first 20 minutes, with Clarkson holding a slight 6-5 shot advantage.Â
In the 2nd frame,
Tristan Sarsland would get his first goal as a Golden Knights at 4:21, with assists from
Jordan Power and
Mathieu Gosselin. RPI would tie the game 34 seconds later when Altti Nykanen scored for the Engineers.Â
Clarkson would take the lead again when another freshman would score. This time,
Ryan Taylor would be the member of the Class of '26 to net a goal at 19:41 of the 2nd, giving the Knights the lead going into the break.
In the 3rd period, RPI would tie the game up on a goal from Austin Heidemann at the 9:54 mark. The teams would trade chances including a breakaway from
Ayrton Martino with under a minute left.Â
Overtime saw the Engineers possess the puck from the drop and catch Clarkson in their own zone through 2 line changes for the Engineers. The fresh legs for RPI allowed them to get Max Smolinski open in front where he was able to put a pass from John Beaton behind Haider for the overtime win.
Ethan Haider finished with 22 saves, Jack Watson of the Engineers finished with 20.
Clarkson, now 10-10-3, will travel to Schenectady for a 4:00 pm game vs Union College and former assistant coach, Josh Hauge.
