Golden Knights Travel to Syracuse

After two wins in two games, the fifth-ranked Clarkson University Women's Hockey team will look to continue its perfect start to the season when the Golden Knights head to Syracuse for a 7:00 p.m. game on Tuesday night.

Clarkson is 2-0-0 after the Green and Gold swept a home-and-home, non-conference series against rival St. Lawrence last weekend. In the first game, on Friday night in Cheel Arena, the Golden Knights took the lead in the first period and never looked back, with the score ending up at 4-0. Senior assistant captain Olivia Howe, junior Cayley Mercer, and sophomore Savannah Harmon all led the way with a goal and an assist while freshman Loren Gabel also added a goal. Sophomore goaltender Shea Tiley made 23 saves for her first shutout of the year and the tenth of her career.

The game on Saturday followed a different script, as the Saints took a 2-0 lead into the third period on their home ice. Clarkson halved the lead when Harmon scored less than three minutes into the period and the Golden Knights pulled level on a goal by Mercer at 10:56. Those setup the heroics of freshman Rhyen McGill, who scored her first collegiate goal off a pass from Mercer to give Clarkson a 3-2 victory, its fifth in a row over the Saints. Clarkson has now won 12 of 14 games against St. Lawrence, dating back to the 2012-13 season and leads the all-time series 19-17-4.

The game against Clarkson will be the first official contest of the season for the Syracuse Orange. The Orange played a scrimmage against Queens last weekend and fell 1-0. Syracuse finished the 2014-15 season with a 11-15-10 overall record and fell to RIT 2-1 in the CHA Championship game. Last season, the Golden Knights won both games against the Orange, taking a 9-0 win at home followed by a 4-1 road win. Clarkson holds an all-time record of 9-1-0 against Syracuse and has won eight straight contests.
